Words matter

Specific language – with all its words and phrases – which has already been formulated in reference to the coronavirus pandemic (e.g. suspicious case, isolation) can carry with it negative connotations and thereby, strengthen existing stigmatizing attitudes. It can also preserve negative stereotypes or misconceptions, reinforcing false links between illness and other factors, cause widespread fear or dehumanize those who contracted the virus. At the same time, it may also discourage people from undergoing check-ups, therapy or the required quarantine.

It is strongly advised to use words and phrases which put a human being first, words that have empathy at their core.
