Important notice for students

10.04.2020

Dear Students!

Since the original version of this information caused some misunderstanding in the beginning of this week that is why I would like you to know:

1. According to yesterday’s decision from the government the suspension of ‘traditional’ classes will last at least until 26th April 2020.

2. We are trying our best to make online education happen in the scope that is now possible. It is a novelty and a challenge for us as well. The biggest problem was and are now practical classes at the last years of medical and dentistry studies, nursing and midwifery. After the MUG’s legal actions now it is possible to obtain up to 20% of ECTS of a subject via online learning which in most cases means 20% of the study load of the subject. This regulation pertains most of all to practical education in the 6th year MD studies, 5th dentistry and practical classes in nursing and midwifery. Details on online learning should soon be published in the Extranet in each subject folders.

3. If you decide to volunteer in a medical or sanitary-epidemiological entity during the time of classes suspension you can apply to obtain credit for practice, clinical classes or practical classes. The decision to give you credit for those mentioned above is made by the Dean of your Faculty. The decision will be made upon your request after thorough evaluation of the learning outcomes you acquired during the voluntary service. You can volunteer outside Gdańsk and Poland, where you currently reside, but please remember the following rules:

a. Your safety is the most important! You can volunteer as long as it is fully safe – if you work with others it is crucial that you are equipped in means of personal protection and hygiene proper to the level of risk connected with the work; you should not commute via public transport – it is best to walk, ride a bike or use your own car; keep at least 1,5 m distance at your workplace. If, in your opinion, the voluntary service is not safe – do not engage.

b. Prior to your service you should be given a volunteer agreement.

c. If you plan to obtain credit for practical classes based on the voluntary service your work should be documented. Please note that the certificate shall include the place, type and duration of your service – based on that document the Dean will resolve to give you credit. The certificate should also include a signature of a qualified medical doctor or an experienced nurse/midwife.

d. Your work should be honest and decent – whatever it means in your book.

4. The University’s return to the „normal” state after this break will be long, multistage and full of surprises. Not all classes will resume overnight; you will be notified about the resuming of ‘traditional’ classes as soon as we can set the approximate date.

Wishing you good health, peace of mind, some distance to the current events and a bit of luck

Tomasz Smiatacz, M.D., Ph.D., D.Sc.
